Ha Jung-woo stubbornly holds onto his Mad Concrete Dreams

    by lovepark

In today’s capitalistic society, money is king, or in the case of tvN’s newest suspense-thriller Mad Concrete Dreams, owning a building is the next best thing. Despite drowning in debt, Ha Jung-woo (Narco-Saints) is the proud proprietor of commercial real estate, and he just needs one lucky break to finally realize his dreams.

Even when pinned to the floor, Ki Su-jong (Ha Jung-woo) begs his assailants to allow him to pay off the debts on his building. He is the definition of pathetic, and his friend Min Hwal-sung — played by Kim Joon-han (Newtopia) — offers him a chance to fight back. Having expended every other resource, including the last bit of sanity from his wife Im Soo-jung (Low Life), Su-jong seems to have accepted Hwal-sung’s harebrained scheme and convinces himself that everything will be over once the area gets approved for redevelopment. We also get a gkimpse of Krystal (Player 2 – Master of Swindlers) as Hwal-sung’s wife, Jeon Yi-kyung, and she seems either shocked or unconvinced by her husband’s scheme.

In the beginning, Su-jong did everything to keep his family afloat, but running deliveries had its limits. He even dipped into his daughter’s school savings, but the debt kept increasing while his building’s value fell. Thus, when Hwal-sung asked him to do one more job with him, the temptation was too much.

With 500 million won on the line, Su-jong crosses over to the dark side in what he thinks is his last chance to turn his life around. As the mood of the trailer shifts to something darker, Hwal-sung says that he is not playing around as we get a glimpse of a suitcase filled with cash and a body stuffed into a trunk.

Each passing moment cements Su-jong’s depravity as he bitterly states that he will not quit now. However, the stakes have gotten higher as Shim Eun-kyung (Way Back Love) threatens to kill them all if they break their promise. As Su-jong fights for his life, the trailer ends with him standing next to his wife and sighing about the long day.

Directed by filmmaker Im Pil-sung (Persona, Scarlet Innocence) with scripts by novelist Oh Han-ki (Baguette Child Soldier), Mad Concrete Dreams begins its 12-episode survival story March 14 in the Saturday-Sunday slot.
