Park Hyung-shik (Twelve) has announced his next project as Cha Seung-won (Mercy for None) and Ra Mi-ran’s (To the Moon) son in Director Won Shin-yeon’s newest action-comedy Family Force. This would be the actor’s second feature film since his performance in Juror 8 which earned him the Best New Actor and Popular Star awards back in 2019.
The film follows a family of three-generation Marines with the youngest — played by Park — currently in active duty. The family accidentally gets caught up in a terrorist attack resulting in plenty of action and laughs. Cha Seung-won has been cast to play the dad, and Ra Mi-ran takes on the role of his wife. No news has been announced as of yet on who will play the grandpa.
Both Cha and Ra have been staples to Chungmuro for decades, and their shared filmography spans 90 titles alone. Despite their prolific history, this would be the first time the two have shared the screen together, but given their familiarity with comedies, I bet their synergy will be crackling. Ra Mi-ran’s most recent work in the superhero comedy HI-FIVE was hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming while Cha Seung-won’s performance in the critically acclaimed Park Chan-wook black comedy No Other Choice was subdued and grounded.
Director Won Shin-yeon, known for his films such as Seven Days, The Suspect, and The Battle: Roar to Victory, departs from his usual fare and grabs the megaphone in his first ever action-comedy. This could be the director’s first movie with a more humorous bent, or it could align more closely with his debut feature A Bloody Aria which was more black comedy and thriller. Meanwhile, his latest robot blockbuster Seeking the King still awaits a release date after its original 2024 announcement. Casting for Family Force has wrapped, and the movie plans to begin pre-production soon.
