Recently, JTBC aired CCTV footage showing the fatal assault that took the life of film director Kim Chang Min, sparking public fury.

Director Kim passed away last year after falling into a brain-dead state following an assault. On March 31, KST, the bereaved family and the police revealed the exact circumstances surrounding his death. Director Kim had visited a 24-hour restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, with his son in the early hours of October 20 last year, when he became involved in a dispute with other patrons. The altercations reportedly began after the patrons complained that Kim’s son, who reportedly has autism, was making too much noise.
The footage released by JTBC showed that director Kim was punched in the face by one of the perpetrators, after which he fell to the ground. Others continued to attack him, even after he was rendered completely powerless to even control his own body. The assault continued even outside the restaurant with overwhelming violence.
Director Kim was taken to a nearby hospital, but it was too late by then. He was declared brain-dead. After a brief fight, he passed away on November 7 last year, saving four lives through organ donation.
According to reports, despite the police applying for an arrest warrant for suspect “A” on charges of causing death by injury, the court rejected it, citing that the suspect was not a flight risk. The case has now been referred to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment without detention. The bereaved family expressed their disappointment in the inadequate initial response by the authorities and even alleged that the investigation was delayed by months.
The graphic footage has sparked public fury, with calls for strict punishment for the perpetrators.
