Would You Marry Me? Korean Drama Review

Would You Marry Me is a romantic comedy about a quirky designer (Jung So Min) whose engagement ends due to her cheating fiancé, but it threatens to cost her the new townhome they won, so she enters into a fake marriage with the heir (Choi Woo Shik) to South Korea’s largest bakery because he has the same name as her fiancé.

Jung So Min plays Yoo Me Ri. She is a designer who ends up in a really bad situation after her fiancé cheats on her which ends their engagement. Then after being scammed, she faces losing the townhome she had won with her fiancée, so she devises a plan to keep it.

Choi Woo Shik is Kim Woo Ju. He is a marketing team leader and the heir to a large bakery company. His life takes a crazy turn after he meets Me Ri and gets pulled into her plan of having him pretend to be her husband in order to keep her townhome.

Would You Marry Me? was a mostly light romantic comedy with a fun premise. I liked the unique situation that pulls our couple together with Woo Ju sharing the same name as Me Ri’s ex.

The plot stays pretty basic for a good chunk of the drama as our couple has some issues to work out, and they get to know each other. Things move fairly slow in the first half as we watch our couple try to get their act together. I do wish we would have had more time with them as a couple especially with the premise of them being fake married.

I did really love Woo Ju and Me Ri as a pairing. Although there are definitely some communication issues, they are very supportive of one another. I liked seeing the relationship develop and just how close they got.

They were super cute together and even a tad swoony at times. I also really love Choi Woo Shik and Jung So Min, so I was really excited to see this pairing from the get go. They are both just lovely together.

The drama did feel like it spread itself a little thin as a whole. It wanted to cultivate the main romance, a secondary romance (Baek Sang Hyeon and Shin Seul Ki), office shenanigans, family drama, shady business happenings, and issues with the Me Ri’s ex (Seo Bum June).

Speaking of Me Ri’s ex, Woo Ju #2, this was such an odd character. He was written to be almost over-the-top comedic at times, but he was completely unsympathetic in every way and flip-flopped all over the place with his emotions. I just struggled to figure out how the show wanted me to feel about him.

By trying to do so much in 12 episodes, everything felt very surface level, and we weren’t able to go very deep with any aspect of the drama. Also, the slow developments in the first half impacted the pacing with that part feeling more leisurely while the second half picked up steam in an effort to get everything in.

About 2/3 of the way through things really ramp up, and there’s even quite the tonal shift for a couple of episodes as things get much more serious. There was a lot happening, but I didn’t feel like I was as invested as I should be since everything was so lightly touched upon.

But overall, Would You Marry Me? is a light and easy drama. While the pacing was an issue, and it did spread itself too thin, there are plenty of interesting plot elements, and the romance is super cute. Although it didn’t completely click with me, I did mostly enjoy it.

    My Rating: 6/10
