Faded idol Kang Dong-won rocks out to retro idol tunes in Wild Sing

Ushering summer in with a throwback tune and groovy retro swagger is Wild Sing, a comedy film about the washed-up idol trio Triangle that chases after the chance to revitalize their dreams.
Putting on his headphones, our star Hwang Hyun-woo — played by Kang Dong-won (Tempest) in a getup I thought never see him in, LOL — grooves to his tunes as he gets off the bus, much to the bewilderment of the passing ajummas. As the dancing king, Hyun-woo’s in charge of the team’s choreography, and he declares as much with a cheesy self-assured pose.
The next addition to our oddball team is the rapper Gu Sang-gu, played by Uhm Tae-gu (Light Shop), who fires off a disgruntled verse about how he’d been tricked into joining this crew. So much for being told that he’d join a rap-based hip hop team! As for our final member, we have Park Ji-hyun (You and Everything Else) as Byun Do-mi, whose cutesy and bubbly stage persona is the complete opposite of her brusque demeanor offstage. Ha, Hyun-woo’s side-eye is cracking me up, especially because I don’t doubt that Do-mi would actually smack him.
Against all odds, Triangle’s debut shoots to the top of the music charts, beating out second place by a huge margin. And who should the runner-up be but the ballad soloist Choi Sung-gon, played by Oh Jung-se (We Are All Trying Here) in an ~emotional singer~ haircut. HAHAHA, I barely recognized him at first, omg!
Unfortunately for our trio, fame is fleeting. After a night of celebration, they wake up to devastating news — their hit song has been accused of plagiarism. Public opinion instantly turns against them, and the next thing we know, Hyun-woo wakes up in the present day. Just like the photo of his glory days that’s still framed up on his wall, Hyun-woo leaps at the second chance to perform when a team abruptly pulls out of a show.
With that, our faded idol sets out to convince his former groupmates. But neither the humble salaryman Sang-gu nor the successful Do-mi (she has bodyguards now!) seem keen on reliving their dark past… at first, that is. Meanwhile, a second chance also finds its way to a scraggly Sung-gon, whose eyes light up with the fiery determination to stand onstage again (and presumably win the trophy this time).
Chasing their second chance, our reunited trio drives out on a roadtrip to the shining stage, only for an unexpected accident to pop their tires. But never fear, Sung-gon is here! That’s how our former rivals end up carpooling to their shared destination, though it isn’t long before they pick up a police car on their tail. “Step on the gas!” yells Hyun-woo, and the wild-eyed Sung-gon isn’t about to refuse. Will this chaotic car make it to the performance in one piece? Will their dreams take flight again? There’s only one way to find out.
With filmmaker Son Jae-gon (Secret Zoo) at the helm, the music comedy film Wild Sing is slated for a theatrical release in cinemas on June 3.
