Kim Mu-yeol will Teach You a Lesson using more than a pen
by lovepark
Netflix’s upcoming school drama Teach You a Lesson creates a fictionalized universe where schools have lost decorum and students have become monsters. In charge of fixing this horrid turn of events is Kim Mu-yeol (Queen Woo) as Inspector Na Hwa-jin, and unlike your traditional educators, he is willing to fight fire with fire.
The trailer begins with a monologue from Education Minister Lee Sung-min (Nine Puzzles) explaining the purpose of his new program, the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (ERPB). He claims that the ERPB is not against students but monsters, and a quick glimpse of a school shows it littered with gang flags, inattentive students, and graffitied windows. The minister says that the only way to take down a monster is by using another, which is where Hwa-jin comes in.
On paper, Hwa-jin’s job is to provide specialized guidance to schools, but in reality, it means matching the violence that has become the norm amongst the student body. The government’s justification for this violence is that teachers can no longer be expected to defend themselves with only a pen, so their inspectors will do it for them. Thus, the first ERPB team is formed, and joining Hwa-jin are Inspector Im Han-lim played by Jin Ki-joo (Undercover High School ) and Deputy Director Bong Geun-dae played by Pyo Ji-hoon (Good Partner).
As the ERPB is attacked from all sides — cocky students, entitled moms, and opposing politicians — our trio at least has the full support of the education minister who will not allow anyone to interfere. Their mission is to impart a “true education,” one that these students will feel deep in their bones, and protect those that need protecting. Sometimes that means breaking into buildings, beating up kids, or hacking into a system, but at the end of the day, Hwa-jin does everything out of love (or so he claims).
Directed by PD Hong Jong-chan (Mr. Plankton) with scripts by Lee Nam-kyu (Heavenly Ever After), the upcoming webtoon adaptation (Get Schooled in English) premieres on Netflix July 5.
