WINNER‘s Song Mino has admitted to carrying out several personal favors for his former public service supervisor as a military service-related controversy continues to unfold.
On July 14, Song appeared in court as a witness during the trial of his former supervisor, identified only as Mr. A, who is accused of abusing his position by allegedly giving Song preferential treatment during his mandatory military service.
During his testimony, Song acknowledged that the two had developed a personal relationship while he was serving as a public service worker.
He admitted to lending Mr. A money, giving advice regarding Mr. A’s child’s dance activities, and even to going on a two-day fishing trip together. However, when prosecutors questioned whether those gestures were effectively favors given in exchange for preferential treatment during his military service, Song firmly denied the allegation.
“I never did those things expecting special treatment or anything in return. It was simply a friendship that developed during my service.”
The court also heard that Song had traveled to cities including Busan and Jeju without always receiving prior approval, while attendance records and leave requests were allegedly processed retroactively. Messages presented during the trial also showed Mr. A telling Song that he could “rest at home if he was tired.”
Song acknowledged that his supervisor had been considerate of his health but insisted that any absences were entirely his own responsibility. He also expressed remorse toward his former supervisor.
“Not reporting to work was completely my responsibility. Leaving my post was my own decision. I feel deeply sorry that he’s standing trial because of me.
Song explained that he had been suffering from severe bipolar disorder and panic disorder throughout his military service. According to his testimony, his doctor had advised him against serving from the beginning and later recommended suspending his service, but he insisted on completing it.
“I now regret insisting on completing my military service.”
The trial involving Mr. A is scheduled to continue on August 20, when the court is expected to conclude proceedings after questioning the defendant. Meanwhile, prosecutors have previously requested a sentence of one year and six months in prison for Song Mino in his separate military service violation case.
