Former BIGBANG member Seungri is facing another police investigation after a man in his 30s filed a complaint accusing him of assault, with photos believed to have been taken around the time of the alleged incident now circulating online.
On September 13, an overseas social media user identifying themselves as a Seungri fan uploaded photos of the former idol reportedly taken in August. The pictures show Seungri smiling alongside several people at what appears to be a drinking establishment. Wearing a black cap and T-shirt, he poses for the camera while making an awkward rock-and-roll hand gesture. Across two tables are a birthday cake, various dishes and multiple bottles of soju, suggesting that the group had been drinking and celebrating together.
The photos attracted additional attention due to reports surrounding Seungri’s latest legal dispute. His alleged victim was spotted posing happily with Seungri in the photo.
According to Seungri, he was eating with two acquaintances at a sundaeguk restaurant in Gangnam on the morning of August 8 when an intoxicated customer from another table, his alleged victim, allegedly approached them and repeatedly asked to join their table.
“I refused several times, but he wouldn’t leave and kept saying he had a business idea and wanted me to hear him out. There was an argument during that process.”
Despite the initial confrontation, Seungri claimed that the situation subsequently calmed down considerably. According to him, A was eventually allowed to join the group, after which they talked and drank together.
“In the end, we sat together, I listened to what he had to say, we drank together, agreed to treat each other like brothers, and even exchanged phone numbers.”
Seungri claimed A even saw him off when he left the restaurant. He further alleged that several hours later, A sent him a message saying he would bring a business proposal the following week. For that reason, Seungri said he was confused when the same person subsequently accused him of assault.
“A even saw me off when I went home. A few hours later, he texted me saying he would bring a business plan the following week. I don’t know what changed his mind, so I’m bewildered that he’s now claiming he was harmed and filing a complaint.”
Seungri did acknowledge one potentially significant detail from the confrontation. According to his account, he picked up a bottle while attempting to make clear that he did not want A joining his table. However, he denied using it as a weapon or threatening the man.
“It’s true that I picked up a bottle while expressing that I didn’t want him joining us. I only picked it up. I didn’t swing it or use it to threaten him.”
Police have not yet announced a conclusion regarding the competing accounts. Seungri claims he has secured text messages exchanged with A, CCTV footage from inside the restaurant, and statements from witnesses and is considering filing a counter-complaint accusing A of making a false accusation.
