Sean said, “My mother says I was naturally well-behaved. And I admit, there were times like that,” adding, “I’ve tried alcohol. On my 18th birthday, I drank in Guam. I wasn’t interested in smoking, though. If I’m not interested, I just don’t do it.”
He continued, “I ran away from home at 16. Back then, I was quick-tempered. After arguing with my mother, I left and stayed out for a couple of days. When I realized I needed clothes to live on my own, I packed some and said, ‘I’m going to be independent,’ and I haven’t been back home since.”
He added, “It was during vacation, and there were a few kinds of work I could do in the U.S. Manual labor paid the best. Forty years ago, I earned $50 a day. I saved that money to go to school and worked at grocery stores and restaurants.”
Sean said, “With the money I saved, I found a roommate and lived with him. I kept working. I don’t even remember much, but my personality is such that once I make a decision, I don’t look back. From my parents’ perspective, it was probably heartbreaking. At the time, I didn’t really understand that.“
