If you are looking for the delightful chaos that gender bender romances bring to the screen, look no further! From hilarious misunderstandings and secret identities to unexpected romances and emotional journeys of self discovery, Korean dramas and movies have explored this trope in some truly memorable ways. Whether you are in the mood for a lighthearted romantic comedy, an outright comedy that turns gender expectations upside down, or a deeply moving drama that explores love, identity, and societal expectations, there is something for everyone.

Here are six K-dramas and one Korean movie that embrace the gender bender trope and deliver all the chaos, comedy, romance, and heartfelt moments you could ask for.

    “Love in Disguise”

Adapted from Lee A Yeon and Ryu Do Ha’s web novel “Why Don’t You Know It’s a Girl?” “Love in Disguise” is a recent addition to the adored list of gender bender Korean dramas.

The plot follows Kang Jae Hee (Seol In Ah), a meticulous detective with a special forces background who goes undercover as a male secretary to investigate the murder of Yoon Yi Jun’s (Yim Si Wan) previous secretary after the sassy heir becomes a central figure in the investigation. As Jae Hee navigates the challenges of maintaining her disguise while dealing with Yi Jun’s demanding personality, their professional relationship gradually develops into an unexpected romance.

There are two aspects that make “Love in Disguise” particularly enjoyable. First, the male lead’s diva personality turns nearly every scene into a comedic masterpiece. Whether it is Jae Hee knocking Yi Jun into a cat litter box or Yi Jun attempting to get revenge only to fail spectacularly, the drama delivers plenty of laugh out loud moments in every episode.

Second, Jae Hee does not have to overhaul her appearance to pull off her disguise. Already a tomboy, she embraces a style that feels natural to her rather than conforming to conventional expectations of femininity—and that is worth celebrating because tomboy representation matters!

    “Coffee Prince”

Considered a classic of the gender bender K-drama genre, “Coffee Prince” follows Choi Han Kyul (Gong Yoo), the grandson of a wealthy chairman. Despite being one of Seoul’s most eligible bachelors, Han Kyul remains fixated on his first love, who sees him only as a friend. Tired of his grandfather’s constant matchmaking attempts, he devises a plan to pose as the gay boyfriend of Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye), a hardworking young woman who is frequently mistaken for a man. Believing Eun Chan to be male, Han Kyul assumes that pretending to be in a same-sex relationship will help him escape his family’s expectations.

Later, pressured to prove himself, he takes over a struggling cafe and rebrands it as Coffee Prince, hiring attractive male employees to draw female customers. Desperate for income, Eun Chan continues to conceal her identity to secure a job at the cafe, setting the stage for unexpected complications and romance.

“Coffee Prince” is much more than a gender bender romantic comedy. While many dramas in the genre either turn conversations about sexuality into a punchline or avoid addressing them altogether, “Coffee Prince” explores the emotional turmoil of falling for someone you believe to be of the same gender. Although viewers know that Eun Chan is a woman, Han Kyul does not, forcing him to confront feelings that challenge his understanding of his own sexuality. His journey from confusion and denial to self acceptance is portrayed with remarkable sincerity and dignity. Rather than reducing his internal conflict to a source of comedy, the drama gives it the emotional depth and realism it deserves.

    “You’re Beautiful”

“You’re Beautiful” revolves around A.N.JELL, a popular boy band that is preparing to welcome a new vocalist. Its agency selects the male vocalist Go Mi Nam (Park Shin Hye) to join the group. However, after a botched eye surgery abroad leaves him unable to participate immediately, his agent persuades his twin sister, Go Mi Nyeo (also played by Park Shin Hye), a novice nun in training, to take his place temporarily. Although Mi Nyeo is initially reluctant, she agrees to help her brother and disguises herself as a man. What she does not anticipate is having to live in the band’s dormitory alongside its male members, making it increasingly difficult to maintain her identity while navigating friendships, misunderstandings, and unexpected romantic feelings.

“You’re Beautiful” is the perfect gender bender K-drama for K-pop fans, combining the chaos of a hidden identity with the charm of a fictional idol band. While the premise is undeniably ridiculous and the misunderstandings can be predictable, the drama makes up for it with hilarious situations, lovable characters, and a surprisingly memorable soundtrack.

    “To the Beautiful You”

“To the Beautiful You” follows Goo Jae Hee (Sulli), a Korean girl living in the United States who becomes inspired by high jumper Kang Tae Joon (Minho) after watching him compete. Determined to help him return to the sport following an injury, she transfers to an all boys athletic school by disguising herself as a boy. Sharing a dormitory with Tae Joon, Jae Hee struggles to keep her identity a secret while navigating school life, friendships, and romantic feelings.

“To the Beautiful You” is a quintessential school romance that combines the charm of a gender bender premise with the nostalgia of an early 2010s K-drama. Sulli brings a natural sweetness to Goo Jae Hee. While the plot relies on familiar misunderstandings and the occasional suspension of disbelief, the drama’s greatest appeal lies in its youthful energy, lovable characters, and the friendships that develop along the way.

    “The King’s Affection”

Set during the Joseon Dynasty, “The King’s Affection” follows Dam Yi (Park Eun Bin), a princess whose birth as a twin daughter is considered an ill omen. Ordered to be killed, she is secretly sent away and raised in hiding before eventually returning to the palace as a maid. Her life takes a dramatic turn when her twin brother, Crown Prince Lee Hwi, dies in a case of mistaken identity. To protect the royal family’s secret, Dam Yi’s mother persuades her to assume his identity and take his place as crown prince. Dam Yi distances herself from those around her to avoid discovery. However, her resolve begins to falter when she reunites with Jung Ji Woon (Rowoon), her first love, who becomes her royal tutor.

What makes “The King’s Affection” particularly compelling is how Dam Yi’s struggle for survival becomes a quiet rebellion against the rigid expectations placed on women. Park Eun Bin delivers a remarkable performance, portraying a crown prince whose authority, vulnerability, and suppressed emotions coexist without diminishing one another.

    “The Tale of Nokdu”

Based on Hye Jin Yang’s webtoon “Nok Du Jeon,” “The Tale of Nokdu” is a historical romantic comedy that follows Jeon Nok Du (Jang Dong Yoon), a skilled swordsman who has spent his life on a secluded island with his father and brother. When his family is attacked by mysterious female assassins, Nok Du pursues one of them to the mainland, eventually arriving at a village inhabited exclusively by widows. Determined to uncover the truth behind the attack, he disguises himself as a woman and settles in the village to investigate without raising suspicion. There, he meets Dong Dong Ju (Kim So Hyun), an apprentice gisaeng (courtesan trained in music and the arts) who harbors a painful past and a desire to avenge someone she once loved.

“The Tale of Nokdu” is the kind of historical romantic comedy that knows exactly how to make the most of its gender bender premise. Jang Dong Yoon is an absolute delight as Nok Du, committing wholeheartedly to his disguise and delivering some of the drama’s funniest moments without losing the character’s strength or charm. Kim So Hyun’s Dong Ju is equally compelling, bringing a fiery personality and emotional depth to a heroine who refuses to let society dictate her future.

    “Pilot“

A remake of the Swedish film “Cockpit,” “Pilot” follows Han Jeong U (Cho Jung Seok), a highly accomplished pilot whose successful career comes to an abrupt end after he makes sexually inappropriate remarks to his female colleagues while intoxicated. This results in his dismissal and blacklisting from the aviation industry. Struggling to find employment and rebuild his life, Jeong U decides to reinvent himself in the most literal way. With the help of his sister, Han Jeong Mi (Han Sun Hwa), he adopts a female identity and successfully secures a job as a female pilot. However, maintaining his disguise while navigating his new professional and personal circumstances proves far more complicated than he anticipated, leading to a series of comedic situations and unexpected challenges.

“Pilot” is a gender bender comedy that gets much of its appeal from watching its male lead experience the very sexism and everyday micro aggressions he once subjected his female colleagues to. The irony is particularly satisfying as he encounters the dismissive attitudes, double standards, and casual discrimination that women routinely navigate in professional spaces. While the movie leans heavily on comedy, its premise offers a pointed commentary on gender inequality and the privileges men often take for granted.
