Song Review: POW – Come True (ft. Shin Onyu)

POW is such an interesting group. At every turn, they seem to make moves antithetical to traditional idol group success. Their music is often quite subdued, calibrated for coffeeshops rather than stadiums. It’s almost like indie music filtered through an idol group persona, which really should be more compelling than it has been.

Instead, the group keeps churning out material like Come True. To me, this sounds like a quirky-cute filler b-side from an early-2010s boy group. It doesn’t scream “title track,” casting a muted energy that’s at once sprightly and quiet. Some cool vocal samples paint an immersive backdrop that could have grown into something quite signature, but the percussion needs greater presence to make the production work. It’s just too soft. Later in the track, Shin Onyu from indie rock band Shin In Ryu makes a very short (and kind of throwaway) cameo, lending credence to my “POW as indie artists” theory. However, I have a weird feeling that Come True will grow more addictive with time. It’s got a few captivating earworms buried in its mix.
