aespa are gearing up for their second studio album, LEMONADE (dropping May 29), and promotions are already in full swing.

As part of it, the group dropped a pre-release single on May 11. “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” notably features G-Dragon and leans into hip-hop territory with a heavy synth bass and a hook built to overwhelm.
On paper, it sounds like something K-Pop fans would love, but the reactions online have been completely different.

The song is being widely criticized as bland and underwhelming, with many drawing unfavorable comparisons to recent tracks “Dirty Work” and “Rich Man” — previous back-to-back releases that already left a sour taste.

Whether this is a creative risk that hasn’t landed or a sign of something deeper is up for debate. But with the full album still weeks away, aespa have some ground to make up.
