Reasons to watch: Netflix’s latest original series, Boyfriend on Demand, stars Jisoo and Seo In-guk in a fantasy rom-com about the possibilities and pitfalls of virtual romance and love in the real world.
Jisoo plays a webtoon editor whose busy life leaves little time for dating. Between trying to balance her workload and office politics, she’s frazzled and too exhausted to spend her precious free time on trying to date. But that doesn’t mean she’s entirely uninterested in romance, so when she hears about a fancy new virtual dating subscription that lets her try out a new boyfriend in a new setting whenever she wants, she signs up right away.
It’s thrilling and fun, but no matter how many virtual dates she goes on, she ends up on her own, thinking of Seo In-guk. Seo plays a real-life man who’s a fellow webtoon editor–and her grumpiest colleague. All the same, there’s something about In-guk. The escape of her dating subscription may offer temporary entertainment, but Jisoo’s heart seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to Seo In-guk.
I’m not fully convinced about Jisoo’s acting ability, (and this is coming from someone who tried both Snowdrop and Newtopia) but maybe Seo In-guk will carry enough of the acting burden to even things out. However, I’m not here for Oscar-worthy performances here or a deep plot. Sometimes you just need a fun, light watch, and the concept of entire virtual worlds with partners to match sounds so fun. That premise paired with an incredible lineup of guest stars (Seo Kang-joon, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Lee Jae-wook to name a few) has me ready to give Jisoo and the drama another shot.
