A new AI trend is taking over Japan as young people create “before and after” cosmetic surgery photos that place two versions of themselves side by side in a single image.
According to the Japan Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the country recorded around 3.3 million aesthetic medical procedures in 2022, making it one of the world’s largest cosmetic markets.
Earlier this month, one user went viral after sharing an AI-generated “two-shot” of her pre-surgery and post-surgery selves, revealing that comparing the images made her cry. The post garnered 15.8 million views and sparked a trend.
Many participants openly list their procedures in the captions, while comment sections fill with praise and emotional messages applauding their transformation and courage.
However, critics warn that the trend could negatively affect teenagers’ perceptions of beauty, especially as Japan has no legal minimum age for cosmetic surgery, though minors typically require parental consent.
