In 2021, all members of GOT7 left JYP Entertainment to seek opportunities elsewhere after their contracts ended.

Subsequently, and despite what was believed, the group returned in 2022 and 2024 with albums and fan concerts, becoming an unexpected dream for many K-Pop fans. Usually, when a group’s contract with an agency ends, and all members depart, it is rare to see them reunite as a whole.

Often, obstacles from their former agency can stand in the way, such as a refusal to transfer legal rights, leading groups to operate under a different name.

Fomerly known as BEAST, HIGHLIGHT took on a new name after leaving  |

Due to the work of GOT7’s leader, JayB, the group were able to leave and become fully self-owned, the first ever in K-Pop.

Another boy group has nearly accomplished many of the same, rare benchmarks with the announcement of their recent comeback.

Boy group BOYFRIEND originally debuted in 2011 under Starship Entertainment. The group was the first to ever have twins debut in the same group, and earned a reliable fanbase between Korean and Japanese promotions.

In 2019, Starship announced that the group would disband. For their 10th anniversary, the group reunited under the name BF and released “Ending Credit,” a track that seemed to imply the group would be no more, which was untrue — the group released another Japanese single album titled Time Limit, featuring all six members and a return to the name BOYFRIEND.

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, BOYFRIEND has announced a Korean comeback, their first in several years, along with the 2026 Boyfriend Fan Concert: Our 15th Season.

While the complete logistics are not entirely known, BOYFRIEND’s comeback marks them as one of two groups to leave their company, return with all debut members and their original name.
