[Drama Chat] Losers in love
by stroopwafel
The finale of My Royal Nemesis has made me realize that I am down bad for a man who only has eyes for another: Cha Se-gye. His undying affection for his lady love is actually a feature and not a bug, and it’s the main reason I fell for him.
Cha Se-gye was utterly, unabashedly transparent about his feelings for the drama’s protagonist, Shin Seo-ri. No matter what obstacles they faced together, he always wore his heart on his sleeve with her, and for that I love him.
It got me thinking about different types of male leads, and what makes the loser in love so different from the Tsundere leads of yore. There’s something so satisfying and entertaining about romantic leads who are bold, yet respectful of their counterpart’s feelings. And at their best, a loser in love moves with an emotional honesty that lingers in the mind. The yearning! The longing! I just can’t get enough of it.
If you love the “losers in love” trope, who is your favorite loser, and what makes them so wonderful? If you’re not a fan of the trope, what makes the construct off-putting for you?
Let the chatting begin!
