Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Crime, noir, romance, thriller
Episode count: 10
Reasons to watch: Park Bo-young enters a world full of dangerous stakes in the new Disney+ crime thriller, Gold Land. Joining her we have Kim Sung-chul, Lee Hyun-wook, Kim Hee-won, Moon Jung-hee, and Lee Kwang-soo.
If the drama title wasn’t enough of a hint, a genuine gold hunt takes off with Park Bo-young setting off a chain of events that could lead to either immense wealth for her–or death. On what starts out as an ordinary day at work in the customs department, Park gets a call from boyfriend Lee Hyun-wook asking for a favor. A coffin is about to arrive at customs, and he asks that she pass it through without any of the usual checks.
Unsurprisingly, there’s funny business going on, and said coffin is filled with gold. The stash is already earmarked to be paid out to various people, but Park upends everything by deciding to operate by finders-keepers rules. (Who can blame her, especially in this economy?) The rest of our cast jumps into the fray at this point, all determined to grab the gold regardless of who might get hurt in the process.
Though Park found the gold, will she be able to hold onto it? While Lee Hyun-wook got her into this mess, it’s a big question mark as to whether he actually cares for her or if it’s her job in customs that really drew him. Kim Sung-chul is another one to keep an eye on. He works for a major loan shark and he initially approaches Park with an offer of help while thinking of her as a mark. But as they work together to stay one step ahead of the others, the lines between work and personal feelings start to blur.
A thriller that mixes crime with a chase for treasure, this is one you’ll want to check out for the cast and the writer. Hwang Jo-yoon is a well-known writer and this is his first project since 2018. He typically works in cinema and his resume includes Old Boy, Masquerade, and Rampant. Gold Land, will be just his third drama ever, so I’m very curious to see his return to the screen.
