Gu Kyo-hwan and Go Yoon-jung are All Trying Here
by solstices
Stills are out for We Are All Trying Here, JTBC’s upcoming drama that takes a realistic and introspective look into our inner struggles. When faced with failure, jealousy, and dwindling self-worth, how can we pick ourselves back up and keep trying?
Gu Kyo-hwan (Parasyte – The Grey) stars as Hwang Dong-man, the only aspiring film director from a famous 8-man collective that has yet to make his debut. Although he talks big and acts confident, it’s all an exaggerated facade to hide how he can’t seem to find his footing. Battling a deep-seated anxiety and searching for a sense of belonging, Dong-man’s emotional journey will resonate with all of us who have ever felt trapped in our insecurities.
Joining him is Go Yoon-jung (Can This Love Be Translated) as Byun Eun-ah, a film PD known for her sharp and incisive scenario reviews. Although she strives to maintain her composure, she often finds herself contending with a nosebleed whenever her emotions run too high. Eun-ah walks a delicate tightrope between the impulse to self-implode in anger and the deeply ingrained trauma of being abandoned, but through meeting Dong-man, she gradually learns to heal her wounds (and vice versa).
Demonstrating how even the seemingly successful have their own troubles, Oh Jung-se (Tempest) steps into the role of Park Kyung-se, a director with five successful films. However, Kyung-se’s recent work has failed to gain traction, causing him to develop an inferiority complex and conflicting love-hate emotions towards the “nobody” Dong-man.
As Kyung-se’s wife and the chairwoman of his film company, Kang Mal-geum (Surely Tomorrow) plays Go Hye-jin, who runs the restaurant where the 8-man film collective gather. Although she sometimes feels embarrassed by how Kyung-se trips over himself to prove his worth against Dong-man, Hye-jin stands firm as the sturdy and unwavering pillar amidst all the brewing conflict.
Rounding out the main cast, Park Hae-joon (Tempest) plays Dong-man’s older brother, the former poet Hwang Jin-man. Although he once penned pages upon pages of poetry, Jin-man soon found himself crumbling after hitting the limits of his talent — or rather, the lack thereof. Clinging to alcohol and the television as his sole lifelines, Jin-man spends his days like a shadow in the dusty corners of the house. Living under the same roof, the brothers may just find solace and solidarity in their shared sorrows.
Helmed by PD Cha Young-hoon (Welcome to Samdal-ri, When the Camellia Blooms) with scripts by Park Hae-young (My Liberation Notes, My Ajusshi), We Are All Trying Here is slated for an April premiere.
