Premiere Watch: If Wishes Could Kill
by stroopwafel
Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Horror, thriller, youth
Episode count: 8
Reasons to watch: For its newest drama, Netflix is taking viewers into one of the scariest places in the world: high school.
If Wishes Could Kill features a cast of mostly up-and-coming young actors, with Jeon So-young and Kang Mina first billed. Baek Sun-ho, Hyun Woo-seok, and Lee Hyo-je round out the main ensemble, with Jeon So-ni and Noh Jae-won in secondary roles.
Set at an average high school, the drama begins just as a brand-new app is making waves among the student body. The app seems to come out of nowhere, and it promises to grant users any wish their heart desires. Our cast has no shortage of things in life that they want (like good grades) and each of the five friends make a wish. It’s all silly fun until the wishes start to come true–and the app screen turns into a 24-hour clock that counts down to each wisher’s death. As they try to figure out a way to survive, they enlist the help of Hyun Woo-seok’s shaman sister and her husband (Jeon and Noh) to help stop the app before they lose their lives.
A survival tale that mixes a modern retelling of “The Monkey’s Paw” with occult themes, it’ll be a terrifying look at what happens when forces beyond control show our teens that academics and angst are the nothing in the face of supernatural technology. Since this is a Netflix drama, I’m steeling myself for the casualties, but I’m still going to hope that our cast make it through in one piece.
