A 24-year-old man has been arrested on charges of attempted murder and murder.
At around 12:11 a.m. on May 5, a 17-year-old female high school student was fatally stabbed on a pedestrian path near Nambu University in Gwangsan-gu while walking home alone. Hearing her screams, a male high school student, who did not know the first victim, intervened, attempting to help her. He was also attacked.
The male victim suffered non-life-threatening wounds during the attack. The female victim was transported to a hospital for treatment, where she succumbed to her wounds. The suspect, surnamed Jang, fled the crime scene–taking a private vehicle, then switching to a cab–but he was apprehended about 11 hours later, at approximately 11:24 a.m. the same day.
While in custody at Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, Jang reportedly told police that he didn’t have a clear motive for attacking the female victim, whom he did not know. He claimed that he’d had suicidal thoughts prior to the attack, and that he didn’t have a particular reason for stabbing the female victim, a random passerby. Authorities believe that the suspect laid in wait, inside his parked car, until he spotted the female victim.
Police arresting the suspect
The stabbing took place on Children’s Day, a national public holiday dedicated to celebrating children.
