In recent months, the K-pop industry has faced growing cybercrimes involving deepfake videos of idols, and popular girl groups, including LE SSERAFIM, were among the most commonly targeted ones in these crimes.

Source Music, the agency of LE SSERAFIM, had previously emphasized its intentions to take legal action against malicious posts targeting the group, including sexually defamatory content. The agency was collecting evidence through internal monitoring efforts, as well as through fan tip-offs, to track these illegal activities. On December 29, KST, the company issued an update on Weverse, informing fans that their efforts had resulted in one deepfake creator being sentenced to prison.

According to Source Music’s statement, individuals who created and distributed deepfake videos targeting LE SSERAFIM now face strong penalties, with one individual already receiving a prison sentence. Another defendant is reportedly in custody with a criminal trial ongoing against them. The agency mentioned that despite such creators using anonymous platforms like Telegram, they are tracking perpetrators by working closely with law enforcement and international investigative authorities.

Apart from the deepfake videos, Source Music also dragged people to court for making malicious posts, including phrases like “cult” and “pseudo-religion,” and won defamation lawsuits against them.
