My Bias My Boss: Episodes 1-2

Many of us fangirls will never experience a situation where we get to choose if we’d rather date our bias or our boss. But our heroine finds herself in the middle of that situation, and her answer may not be what she had in mind before getting caught up in this not-so-hypothetical-for-her scenario.
EPISODES 1-2
Our leading lady is NAM DA-REUM (Kim Hye-joon). Da-reum has been a fangirl of K-pop group, D.N.X since high school, and her bias is LEE CHAN (Cha Woo-min). Da-reum’s dream is to work at Appello — a fashion boutique Chan launched after D.N.X disbanded and he became an actor — and she resigns from her boring job at the large SE Corporation even before getting the job. It’s a bit of a reckless gamble, but it pays off. Da-reum cannot believe her luck on her first day at Appello, and she’s a ball of nerves when it’s time to meet the boss. But to her surprise, the boss isn’t her bias. Instead, he is Chan’s friend, co-CEO, and the man who runs Appello’s day to day operations, KANG HA-GI (Kang Hoon). Cue: Da-reum choking on a calming pill — which clearly was not effective. Lol.
Making a fool of yourself in front of your new boss is not a great first impression. But for Da-reum, it’s actually her fourth not-so-great impression on Ha-gi. He immediately recognizes her as the employee who bumped into him — and left her face print on his white shirt — at SE Corp when he previously dropped by for an investment meeting that turned sour. Lol. She’s also the weirdo who was dancing to no music outside the office, and the drunk girl who tossed an ice ball at his face and left him with a nosebleed. Not that Da-reum remembers any of these — very recent — incidents.
Since SE Corp intends to launch their own fashion platform and they’re known for stealing ideas from their competitors, Ha-gi wonders if Da-reum is a corporate spy from SE. It certainly doesn’t help that she snuck into his office on another drunken occasion to take pictures…of a framed group photo of Chan. Lol. If only Da-reum knew Chan would show up in person at the team dinner and take a selfie with her fellow rookies, she wouldn’t have left early. But good things come to those who wait, and she eventually — and unexpectedly — runs into Chan in the elevator. Our heroine has an instant brain freeze, and it takes all her willpower to act like a normal person in front of him.
It’s not much of a memorable first impression for Chan — until he recognizes her necklace as one he handcrafted years ago at a DIY jewelry studio where he spent some time after D.N.X disbanded and he wasn’t sure of his future path. It was love at first sight when Da-reum saw the necklace on display because the pendant is the shape Chan always draws when he signs autographs. She wanted to buy it for her birthday, but he gifted it to her instead. I guess it meant a lot to him to see that he still had a fan even after the group’s disbandment. Chan had a mask on during the entire interaction, but Da-reum has always suspected it was him.
Back to the present, Da-reum’s long term goal is to be this year’s outstanding employee at Appello, because the outstanding employee gets to work on a project abroad with Chan. Da-reum makes it her short term goal to get on Ha-gi’s good side since he usually chooses the outstanding employee, but nothing she does works. Or so she thinks. Because why is Ha-gi checking himself out in the mirror after Da-reum complimented his style? Lol. Da-reum volunteers to handle social media content for Appello’s upcoming fashion show. And while she’s waiting in Ha-gi’s office for them to attend rehearsals together, she sees a handwritten note confessing feelings for Chan.
The note is actually from Chan’s not-so-slightly obsessive ex-girlfriend and current drama co-star, YOON CHO-YI (Yuna). But there’s a recent blind rumor that Ha-gi and Chan are a gay couple, and Da-reum hilariously assumes that Ha-gi has one-sided feelings for Chan. Ha-gi already suspects Da-reum is a corporate spy, and she thinks he has a crush on Chan. Loool. Let the misassumption games begin! Chan stops by the office while Da-reum is working overtime and listening to D.N.X songs, and he easily clocks that he was her bias. He writes his phone number on her palm and tells her to call him (for a platonic meal). But when her best friends and co-fangirls, PARK MI-MI (Kong Ji-ho) and LEE SEUL-AH (Kim Ah-young) dial the number, Cho-yi picks the call and deletes the call history. Awkward!
Da-reum is forced to work overtime again to redo some materials — which I’m almost sure was deleted from her computer by a jealous colleague. This colleague is probably the one that stood in the shadows watching Chan give Da-reum his number. It’s raining when Da-reum gets off the train, but fortunately, Ha-gi walks her home under his umbrella since they live in the same area. Must be nice. They end up grabbing and pulling each other out of the way to avoid a speeding motorbike, and the week ends on this accidental skinship note. Lol. Not the motorbike being Da-reum and Ha-gi’s second shipper. Yes, second. Ha-gi is the first shipper, as evidenced by the epilogues. He bought the cleaning lady coffee so she won’t disturb Da-reum’s sleep in his office. He also stayed behind at work because Da-reum was working overtime, brought an umbrella because it was going to rain — and made sure to take the same train as her. I see you, Ha-gi, and I respect the hustle. Heh.
My Bias My Boss gives off the energy of a child that Her Private Life and Idol I got together to foster. There’s a strong emphasis on “child” here, since this show has a rather juvenile feel to it. Da-reum barely has a personality other than being a fangirl and an annoying drunk, and I need her to grow up already. I’m not the biggest fan of the actor, but I surprisingly liked Ha-gi a lot more than I thought I would. He’s thoughtful, observant, quietly supportive, and firm when he needs to be. As for Chan, he’s fun and playful, but there’s more depth to him than he lets on. I haven’t read the source material yet, so I can’t say for sure. But I will be pleasantly surprised if the drama doesn’t go the love triangle route. Da-reum does not have romantic feelings for her bias, and Chan is better off with an additional platonic friend in Da-reum rather than the inevitable heartbreak that comes with one-sided feelings.
