Previously, a man, A, was charged for breaking into idol-turned-actress Nana’s residence in Acheon-dong, Guri City, Gyeonggi Province, around 6am on November 15 last year, threatening Nana and her mother with a weapon and attempting to extort money.
After a physical struggle, Nana and her mother subdued A and called the police. Investigation revealed that due to worsening financial hardship, A targeted the upscale residential area of Acheon-dong in Guri for the crime.
A, detained in jail, recently counter-sued Nana for attempted murder and other charges, but the police decided not to prosecute, citing self-defense.
Now, according to Star News, Nana’s legal representative submitted a notification of non-appearance as a witness for A’s robbery and assault charges through the Uijeongbu District Court Namyangju Branch on the 20th.
At the first hearing on January 20 at the Uijeongbu District Court Namyangju Branch’s 1st Criminal Division (Chief Judge Kim Guk-sik), A appeared in custody wearing a prison uniform and admitted to breaking into Nana’s house using a ladder but denied having the intent to commit robbery. He claimed, “The balcony window was open, so I entered simply for theft,” denying the robbery charge.
He also argued that he did not know the house was Nana’s residence and that he did not enter while carrying a weapon. A emphasized that during a confrontation inside the house with Nana and her mother, he was the one being resisted by the two and alleged that “Nana suddenly charged and stabbed me with a weapon.”
With a somewhat rambling tone, A stated, “I was the one trying to stop things. Nana’s mother told me to leave the house, and I begged her to stay calm. In that situation, I was not threatening but rather trying to calm things down, and when I was pushed, I left the house.”
He continued, “It is not true that I strangled Nana’s mother. Because I’m tall, I stood next to her and grabbed her shoulder, not her neck. It is also untrue that I fought with Nana after that. The standoff between me and Nana’s mother had ended, but Nana suddenly rushed at me and stabbed my neck with a knife,” he claimed.
The judge responded, “Put yourself in the other’s shoes. Can you just stay still if someone breaks into your house at dawn and behaves like that? You didn’t try to just lie flat on the floor in that situation, right?” A answered, “That’s correct.”
Ultimately, A’s claim is only interpretable as “I only intended to steal; why should I be stabbed with a weapon?” Even during the court’s questioning, A gave answers implying the victim’s reactions were somewhat unavoidable.
Meanwhile, the trial also mentioned another case involving A. The court revealed that A is currently on trial for insurance fraud at the Bucheon branch of Incheon District Court. A explained, “It’s a 2020 case, but two witnesses required for cross-examination are unreachable.”
Towards the end of the trial, the issue of changing public defenders was raised. When A’s lawyer said, “A wishes to change his public defender,” the judge advised, “You have numerous legal rights granted to you. Someone by your side can best protect and assist you with those rights, so why try to change? It’s good to want to change, but you should listen more to your public defender’s advice. Right now, it’s important to objectively listen to a third party’s perspective that can help you rather than just your own viewpoint.” During this exchange, A and his lawyer expressed differing opinions.
