Bringing a chill to the summer airwaves is tvN’s upcoming horror rom-com Spooky in Love (previously Chilling Romance). A remake of the 2011 movie Spellbound, the drama stars Park Eun-bin (Hyper Knife) and Yang Se-jong (Low Life) in a supernatural courtship filled with ghosts and scares.
Park Eun-bin plays Cheon Yeo-ri, the CEO and heiress to the nation’s number one luxury hotel. Unlike her movie counterpart, Yeo-ri is rich and powerful (so not a magician’s assistant). However, contrary to her flashy exterior, her ability to see ghosts separates her from the world, and since she can make others see them as well with a single touch, she deliberately draws a line between herself and others. As a result, she lives a lonely existence because she does not want anyone else to experience the terrors she endures.
Opposite the ghost-seeing heroine is Yang Se-jong as Prosecutor Ma Kang-wook. He has a strong sense of heroism and has the brains and brawn to back it up. When strange things keep happening around Yeo-ri, Kang-wook gets entangled in her affairs and ends up seeing ghosts, too. Though definitely spooked, he continues to help the hotel CEO in her time of need, and as he stays by her side to solve these specter-related cases, their relationship changes from spooky to love.
Joining the couple is Ong Sung-woo (Boyfriend on Demand) as CL Raymond Hotel CEO Kang Min-hwan. A drama-only character, Min-hwan is visually a gentleman who harbors a lot of ambitions. He is Yeo-ri’s best friend, and while he treats her with a warm smile, to others he can be cold.
From the script reading, it seems the upcoming adaption will diverge significantly from the source material. Hopefully the changes will bring a new twist to the story and deliver plenty of spooks and romance like the original. Directed by PD Lee Min-soo (Resident Playbook, Stain) with scripts written by Choi Jung-mi, tvN’s Spooky in Love is slated for twelve episodes and premieres sometime in July of this year.
