Reasons to watch: The latest show from SBS, Phantom Lawyer, has what dramaland needs right now: Yoo Yeon-seok in aegyo mode. Yoo is joined by Esom and Kim Kyung-nam in this story about a lawyer with the ability to commune with ghosts.
Yoo Yeon-seok plays our titular phantom lawyer, and the name is a reference to a new-found ability to channel ghosts. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t actually have much choice as to when these ghosts take up space in his body, and everywhere he looks there are ghosts clamoring for his attention because they need his help to resolve their earthly grievances.
Enter Esom, a top lawyer at the firm that Kim Kyung-nam runs. Unlike Yoo, she’s an aloof skeptic who initially assumes Yoo is messing with her. Despite some misgivings, she agrees to help him, and they partner up to solve cases together. It’s not all hijinks and cuteness though; as Kim Kyung-nam grows to see Yoo Yeon-seok as a threat to law empire, and there’s no telling how far Kim will go to protect what’s “his.”
A fun twist on the legal genre, Phantom Lawyer is likely to offer up laughs as well as plenty of heartwarming moments as our intrepid legal duo work to help ghosts’ grudges. There’s also going to be the slightly darker angle of Kim Kyung-nam’s storyline, which should help balance the story and keep it from running over into farce. It’s also going to be a great vehicle for Yoo Yeon-seok to show his range and lean into his comedic skills, as he’s going to have a number of different personas to show viewers. And can you really say no to a blushing Yoo Yeon-seok in aegyo mode?
