His situation is telling of the industry conditions.

In the past few years, Korean entertainment industry insiders have raised the alarm about the concerning decline in production of new movies and dramas. While audiences are aware of the circumstances, not many understand how it can affect the lives of those who depend on the industry for their livelihood, and that includes even the more prominent actors in the industry.

Actor Lim Joo Hwan, known for his leading roles in K-Dramas such as Uncontrollably Fond and The Bride of Habaek, is also facing the ugly consequences of the industry’s decline. He recently shocked fans after it was reported that he was working at a Coupang logistics center.

In recent months, multiple posts spread across online communities claiming that Lim was seen working at a logistics center in Incheon. Witnesses shared detailed accounts, and some even got his autograph in person. The actor apparently worked at other locations as well.

Lim’s agency, Basecamp Company, soon responded to these claims. In its statement to the press, the agency admitted that Lim had previously worked at a Coupang logistics center. He worked there several times during breaks between acting projects in the past. However, since he is currently preparing for his next role, the actor is no longer working at the logistics center.

Lim’s prolonged hiatus from acting is being seen as a direct result of the industry’s declining conditions, driven by struggling box office and soaring production costs. In 2024, the number of dramas aired by major OTT platforms and broadcasters reportedly decreased by 25% compared to 2022, while the number of Korean movies released dropped by 20%.

Even with his dazzling repertoire, Lim has not appeared in any major on-screen project since 2022. His most recent work was the play Pride, which concluded last June.

Netizens have responded to Lim’s confession with warm support, praising him for his realistic mindset and willingness to work hard in any position. However, it has also sparked heated discussions about pay disparities in the industry, given that, in recent years, top Korean actors have reportedly enjoyed unprecedentedly inflated incomes.
