Reasons to watch: MBC is taking us on an action-packed adventure in its newest drama, Fifties Professionals. Shin Ha-kyun, Oh Jung-se, and Heo Sung-tae star as our titular trio of star-crossed professionals in their fifties, with Kim Sang-kyung, Kim Shin-rok and Lee Hak-joo in supporting roles.
Years ago, the men were riding high, having climbed to the top of their respective fields. A spy, a secret agent, and a gangster may not appear to have much in common, but their lives converged on a small island during an important intelligence mission that went terribly wrong. A decade on from that ill-fated night, all three of them are still on the island for various reasons (amnesia, a demotion, hiding from the mafia, the usual). Though they were once fearsome and elite, the people in their lives know them as just regular ajusshis.
But the past has a way of making its presence known, and when Kim Sang-kyung emerges as the nefarious power behind the scenes for a major casino breaking ground on the island, it becomes evident that he played a part in the old mission going sideways. Our ajusshi trio reluctantly join forces in order to stop Kim from causing any more harm.
I’m so excited for both the cast and the story. I’m a sucker for a good action-comedy, and this has all the makings of a fun enemies-to-friends story as well. These actors need no introduction, and despite the fact that they made their names in serious roles, they’ve all shown great comedic timing and range throughout their careers.
