Sold Out on You: Episodes 7-8

    by Unit

The second half of our show begins with romantic ships set to sail. But icebergs of jealousy, rivalry, and past incidents and secrets threaten to sink our main ship before their journey even starts.

    EPISODES 7-8

We resume with Ye-jin sleep-kissing Matthew — and transferring her insomnia to him, because the shock keeps my man awake the entire night. Lol. Following the kiss, Matthew becomes clumsy and awkward around Ye-jin. And in the process of teasing him for his clumsiness, she accidentally spills that she was awake the whole time! Ohlala! Turns out Ye-jin didn’t take her pills that night and she was waiting up for Matthew. But she got flustered when he returned home and she pretended to be asleep. She missed the timing to “wake up” while he tucked her in properly, and so she kissed him. Hehe. Anyway, Ye-jin is embarrassed after the reveal, and it’s her turn to become clumsy around Matthew. Lol.

It’s soon festival time in Deokpung village, and this year’s theme is love and rivalry. First, Ye-jin gets jealous about Matthew’s interactions with Jin-yi, and Jin-yi feels the same about Matthew and Ye-jin. Mu-won arrives and makes it a point of duty to get coffee from — and flirt with — Ae-ra. Kwang-mo is a little upset with his rival’s presence, but the plot brings Sung-mi (and Ki-hong) to the village to check up on Ye-jin. Eric also drops by because he plans to launch other L’Etoile products with HIT on the condition that Ye-jin is reinstated. And Eric’s arrival makes Matthew all fired up about participating in the festival. Mind you, he refused the villagers’ earlier pleas to participate. Lol.

Deokpung village face off against a rival village at the festival, and Kwang-mo wins arm wrestling with the power of Sung-mi’s wink. Mr. Farm Supervisor has always been attracted to stronger women, so he’s practically a goner when Sung-mi steps up to represent the village — and wins — in the female arm wrestling category. Lool. Eric and Sang-geum team up to win charades. But Matthew is paired with Ye-jin for another round of charades, and he loses focus — and the game! — because all of her hints end up centered around her lips. Like that’s not bad enough, Matthew also runs Ye-jin’s lap of the relay race (because he noticed she hurt her ankle), and the village gets disqualified! *facepalm* Note to self: never put a man in love on your team.

After the festival, Eric tells Ye-jin to return to Seoul — and HIT — with him. But Ye-jin would rather remain in Deokpung for now, especially since Sung-mi noticed that the village stay is doing her a lot of good. Meanwhile, Jin-yi confesses to Matthew. But it’s mostly to get it off her chest since she knows Matthew likes Ye-jin. And now that the main rivals in love have been taken care of, sorta, it’s time for our main ship to move forward. Ye-jin asks why Matthew is so nice to her, and he asks why she kissed him. She rambles on…until he kisses her. And now our OTP is an official item!

We finally get more details about the morning cream incident from five years ago. Ye-jin agreed to host the broadcast because Myeong-hwa was the guest host. And Myeong-hwa took the blame and retired from acting in order to protect Ye-jin after the incident. Unfortunately, Ye-jin was accused of receiving hush money from the cream company and Myeong-hwa re-cut ties with her daughter without listening to her side of the story. Ye-jin hit rock bottom for a while afterwards. But after regaining her footing as a host, she became obsessively thorough about checking every product she sells. Ye-jin tells Matthew she was initially worried about the L’Etoile launch, but all the moments she spent with him gave her certainty. Regardless of what happened with the essence, she thanks Matthew for helping her do another cosmetics broadcast.

But then it’s revealed that Matthew and his former lab mates developed the morning cream! Color me unsurprised. Mathew is about to tell Ye-jin, but Jin-yi rushes in with the news that Som-yi’s skin condition has worsened. Som-yi had a hamburger with her classmates to celebrate becoming class president, but she has a flour and egg allergy. A worried Ye-jin wants to go along to the hospital, but an upset Jin-yi tells her Som-yi’s skin condition was caused by the morning cream, and it’s all her fault. Ye-jin is devastated on hearing this — and not only does she give up on her plans to return to home shopping hosting, she begins to sleepwalk again. By the way, it seems Jin-yi knows Matthew’s lab developed the morning cream, and she’s cool with him. So I’m not sure why she has more vim for Ye-jin.

The La Fin essence samples that Matthew has been monitoring finally exceed the microbial limit. And while this is good news for Ye-jin’s reputation, it’s bad news for L’Etoile. Michelle flies in from France with zero intention of continuing L’Etoile’s partnership with HIT. But Eric holds a press conference validating Ye-jin’s decision to hold off on the La Fin launch. He also promises to look into what caused the microbial growth issue and improve their quality control system. But I bet Michelle is behind the QC issues based on how adamantly she’s kicking against a reinvestigation.

Now that Ye-jin is back in the public’s good graces, the higher-ups at HIT want her back. Eric also wants her back at her job, but she asks for some time to come to a decision. Eric then accuses Matthew of being the reason behind Ye-jin’s refusal to return to Seoul, and it’s his audacity for me. Matthew goes home and tells Ye-jin the morning cream issue was actually his fault because he made the cream. So she needn’t feel guilty about it, and she can return to her job in peace. But Ye-jin already knows this because she saw a group picture of Matthew and his lab mates in the cream company. Da-dun!

I was expecting Ye-jin to confront Matthew about the picture and then break up with him. But for the first time in a while, we have a female lead who refuses to believe a photograph tells the whole story. Ye-jin knows there’s more to the incident and she presses Matthew for further details. But he takes the noble idiot’s way out and tells her to return to Seoul because “I feel suffocated when I’m with you.” The nerve of this guy!

Actually, the nerve of everyone telling Ye-jin what to do. From Eric who wants a cookie for “putting everything on the line” for Ye-jin. To Jin-yi who admits she knows Ye-jin didn’t knowingly promote the harmful cream, but still holds a grudge and wants her to leave the village. “Come back to Seoul, go back to your job.” Bla bla. How about y’all stop putting pressure on Ye-jin and start respecting her wishes? The poor girl already has abandonment issues from her mom. Then HIT and the public turned on her during the La Fin essence fiasco. And now Matthew is breaking up with her? My goodness! Show needs to give Ye-jin a break before she sleepwalks off a Cliff of Doom or something.
