It’s 1VERSE’s first comeback and they’re already down a member, as Hyuk remains on hiatus during the release of digital single WABIF (Wide Awake Before I Fall). We’re also in visualizer territory rather than a music video, which is probably a smart idea for a group with limited financial resources. I’m always of the mind that any available budget should go toward finding the best songs possible.
Sadly, WABIF (Wide Awake Before I Fall) does nothing for me. Yes, it showcases the group’s vocals in a way that their prior material didn’t, but the song is so hushed it practically evaporates as it plays. The beat finally kicks in halfway through, but the melodies remain just as drowsy. Trendy vocal effects add an even murkier feel to the proceedings. But when it comes down to it, the song itself is simply uneventful. There aren’t many dynamics at play. The melody chases its own tail, repeating the same theme over and over with little sense of growth or change. It’s a shame, because I thought their two singles last year were quite strong in different ways.
