    Song Review: Latency – Latency

Latency made their debut earlier this year, fashioned together from several ex-idols and reinvented as a band. Much of the discourse around their debut centered around whether the girls actually knew how to play their instruments, making the song feel more manufactured than organic. But, this is K-pop. “Manufactured” is hardly a concern for most of us!

The group has returned with their first mini album and self-titled title track Latency. In a sea of band releases this year (even idol groups themselves seem to be in on the sound), Latency are right on trend. But for me, it takes an extra something for a band sound to stick out. Without the glitz and glamor of an idol routine, the music must speak for itself even more clearly.

With this in mind, Latency feels like an afterthought. It’s perfectly serviceable but lacks any killing points that would have me returning for more. A catchy guitar riff opens the track, while the verses are largely driven by percussion and keys. I don’t find the vocals particularly compelling and the construction of the melodies has a familiar sound that feels more rote than exciting. I’m sure Latency will find their fans, but to capture my ear they need to do something more unique.
