In a very short time, the newly-debuted LNGSHOT have racked up plenty of hype and plenty of controversy. Their music has one tiny toe in the world of idols but feels primarily indebted to K-R&B, making it more palatable to those “too cool” for pure pop. While I was impressed with the vocals on their debut track Moonwalkin’, I struggled with the song’s repetitive phrasing and reliance on tired trap production.
FaceTime is another song from their first mini album, promoted as a follow-up with its own music video. If you enjoyed Moonwalkin’, I assume you’ll like this one too. It features more of those smooth, assured vocals, this time perched over a beat more indebted to 90s R&B. This song is really a classic boy band crooner. I enjoy its sound (or, more accurately, the sounds it references), but once again I find the melodies lacking. FaceTime is a lot of mood and atmosphere without the strong hook needed to pull everything together.
Take the chorus, for example. It sounds impeccable, but that compelling tone deserves a knockout refrain that channels the guys’ voices into something more than an aloof musical shrug. As is, FaceTime is a pleasant, lowkey bop that doesn’t draw much attention to itself. More than anything, it makes me hope LNGSHOT can knock things out of the park next time around.
