THE SSYNDROME made their debut late last year, emerging in an era flush with rock bands. Just this year alone, it feels like I’m writing about a rock act every week — and that’s not even including all the rock-influenced comebacks from idol groups. Korea is really into guitars at the moment.
This isn’t a bad thing, but while I enjoy rock music it usually takes something unique or ear-catching to fully invest me in the sound. That can be a melodic feature or the addition of some unexpected instrumental texture. THE SSYNDROME’s configuration is classic, lacking an ear-catching element that might set them apart from other bands. However, the vocal performance is strong and Good Boy boasts a catchy chorus that reminds me of a hook we might have heard in K-pop’s first generation, when rock bands were all the rage. The instrumental crackles with energy, chugging along with full intensity as the song unfurls. These two factors combine to forge an effective comeback. I’m not sure if I’ll still remember it in a year’s time, but Good Boy checks all the boxes it needs to and points toward a promising future for THE SSYNDROME.
