Beloved Comedian Reveals Shocking Weight Gain After Successfully Shedding 100 Pounds And Keeping It Off For 14 Years
In the latest episode of MBC‘s I Live Alone, the comedian—once known as a weight-loss icon for losing 100 pounds (44 kilograms) and keeping it off for over a decade—gave viewers a candid look at how her mindset around food and body image has shifted over the years.

Now, I eat when I want to eat, and I eat when I’m hungry. Back when I was dieting, I was really sensitive, but now I feel like I wouldn’t even get mad if someone stepped on my toes. You become more easygoing.

Her remarks caught the attention of fellow guest Joy of Red Velvet, who pointed out the stark contrast from her past. “But you used to be a total weight loss advocate just a few years ago,” Joy said, visibly surprised. Kim Shin Young first playfully responded, “My body might have been healthy, but my mind wasn’t.” She then revealed the pivotal moment that changed everything.

“I didn’t gain the weight back on purpose,” she explained. Rather, it was the loss of her sunbae comedian and long-time friend Jeon Yoo Sung‘s passing that changed her mindset.
But I was there at comedian Jeon Yoo Sung’s deathbed. He said, ‘Shin Young-ah. I wish I could have a bowl of jjamppong right now, but I can’t. Don’t hold yourself back from eating what you want. Enjoy all the food and live the way you want.’
In that moment, it really hit me. I started thinking… If this is my life, why am I constantly restricting myself? Why am I being so hard on myself?

Since then, Kim Shin Young says she’s made a conscious decision to embrace every part of herself—including the changes in her body. “Gaining weight is also me,” she said.
It’s still who I am. And I realized I should love that too.

The comedian’s raw reflection on self-acceptance, mental health, and the lasting impact of someone’s final words struck the viewers, too, who left her words of love and support.

- I think he really loved jjamppong, so if you think about how he couldn’t have it for 13 years, it’s totally understandable.
- Take care of your health but still eat lots of delicious food. 💙
- We work to be able to eat and live… how long do people really live anyway? Let’s just eat, as long as it doesn’t harm our health.
- Exactly.
- Just eat what you want and live, seriously.
- As long as you live happily, any version of you is fine.
- Let’s eat what we want and live happily.
- Unless there’s a specific reason you have to strictly manage your weight, it’s better to just live normally and enjoy good food. Honestly, the happiness that comes from eating is a pretty big part of life.
