Their relationship apparently began with a very different power dynamic.

Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo recently looked back on their shared military history while reuniting with Kim Go Eun and Yoo In Na for tvN’s Goblin 10th Anniversary Trip.
During the July 12 broadcast, the four actors traveled to Gangneung for a two-day, one-night trip celebrating the mega-hit K-Drama’s upcoming 10th anniversary. At one point, Yoo In Na asked whether Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo had first met while serving in the military together.
Gong Yoo clarified that although they had crossed paths during their service, they did not become genuinely close until filming Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. Working through the demanding production together was what ultimately turned them into close friends.
Their relationship in the military, however, had been far less equal. Lee Dong Wook explained that he was still a private at the time, while Gong Yoo was already one of the most senior soldiers. Gong Yoo joked that Lee Dong Wook could barely even look at him, let alone step on his shadow.
That was when Lee Dong Wook revealed one of the duties he had performed for his future co-star.
I’m only saying this now, but I washed all of Gong Yoo’s underwear and socks!!!

Gong Yoo added that Lee Dong Wook had even folded everything with perfectly sharp creases. Lee Dong Wook then joked that he had “practically raised” the older actor, although Gong Yoo quickly pushed back and insisted the arrangement had only lasted for a short period.
Years later, the two went on to star opposite each other in the 2016 hit series, where their bickering chemistry became one of the show’s most beloved elements!
