Gu Kyo-hwan and Go Yoon-jung believe We Are All Trying Here

    by lovepark

What happens when all your friends succeed besides you? Asking this question in JTBC’s upcoming drama We Are All Trying Here, aspiring director Gu Kyo-hwan (Parasyte – The Grey) struggles against his own feelings of worthlessness and jealousy in a world that seems to have left him behind.

The latest teaser begins with a question from Hwang Dong-man (Gu Kyo-hwan): “Why do we live hard lives as if we will never disappear?” The sentiment rings true for a variety of characters, regardless of their success, as they each face their own troubles at home and work. When Dong-man’s older brother Park Hae-joon (Tempest) asks him what he wants — to debut? to succeed? — the wayward director answers, “To not feel anxious.”

The teaser then moves on to PD Byun Eun-ah, played by Go Yoon-jung (Can This Love Be Translated), who gets a bloody nose at work. She says that her body reacts this way whenever she feels like she will be thrown away, and her boss Choi Won-young (Phantom Lawyer) tosses a script on her desk and orders her to trash it.

As for Oh Jung-se (Tempest) who plays Director Park Kyung-se, he ruefully asks if only Dong-man is pitiful and not him. Despite having a few successful movies under his belt, Kyung-se walks with hunched shoulders as his lead star Han Sun-hwa (The Divorce Insurance) comments that his debut feature was his best work. If that wasn’t bad enough, Kyung-se’s wife and film company executive Kang Mal-geum (Surely Tomorrow) takes responsibility for another failed project and apologizes.

With everyone fighting against these feelings of worthlessness, they continue thrashing against a world that offers no reprieve. While some, like Dong-man’s brother, believe they should fight like everyday is their last, Dong-man argues back that people would actually die if they lived that way. After all, Dong-man just wants to make one film, so that maybe then, some of this self-loathing will go away.

Written by Park Hae-young (My Liberation Notes, My Ajusshi) with PD Cha Young-hoon (Welcome to Samdal-ri, When the Camellia Blooms) at the helm, We Are All Trying Here is slated for twelve episodes and premieres April 18 in the Saturday-Sunday slot.
