New script reading stills give us another peek into MBN’s upcoming six-episode healing drama Azure Spring, centered around the recovery and resilience of a former athlete who begins pursuing a new dream.
Red Velvet’s Yeri (Bitch x Rich 2) stars as Seo Anna, once a star swimmer on the national youth team. Then an injury abruptly truncates her athlete’s career. Fearing what the future might hold — or what it might not — Anna can no longer muster up the courage to take a step forward.
Lost and adrift, Anna ends up moving back to her mother’s hometown. There, she meets Kang Sang-joon (Cashero) as Yoon Deok-hyun, an enigmatic man trapped by his past. Formerly part of the special forces, Deok-hyun found himself swept up in accusations of murder. In a bid to distance himself from others’ judgment, he’s since found his way to the countryside.
Although our pair come from vastly different backgrounds, they soon form an unexpected connection (and cohabitation). Deok-hyun, who seeks refuge in the ocean by diving into its depths as a haenam, offers Anna a word of advice. Just because she can’t swim competitively anymore doesn’t mean her life is ruined. And it certainly doesn’t mean she can never step foot into the water again.
With that, Deok-hyun begins teaching Anna the tools of the trade, from holding her breath to diving below the currents. As she finds renewed purpose in working as a haenyeo and harvesting marine creatures, Anna begins to grow comfortable with the unpredictability of life. After all, the present moment is as azure as spring, in all its infinite possibilities.
Rounding out the cast are Go Joo-hee (Bitch x Rich) and Jung Hyun-min (Assemblyman Detective Ki Do-kyung). Directed by PD Jung Hun-soo with scripts by Ha Jin, the webtoon adaptation Azure Spring is slated to premiere on May 11.
