The sun rises on a new life for My Royal Nemesis Im Ji-yeon
by tccolb
There’s no time like the present, though the adage may hit a little different for the time-jumping Im Ji-yeon (Nice to Not Meet You). And as she discovers in SBS’s latest promos for My Royal Nemesis, there is quite a bit to catch up on in the 300 years or so that our heroine has skipped.
The world has changed at least tenfold over since the 18th century in Joseon that Kang Dan-shim (Im Ji-yeon) had called her home. And I love how quick the clever Dan-shim tries to acclimatize, donning the 21st century’s ubiquitous tracksuit instead of her fancy silks before settling down with a tall stack of newspapers to read up on the present day’s affairs.
But Dan-shim soon discovers that modern society now has the smartphone as well as YouTube. And beginning with the Imjin War (which was way before her time), she doom scrolls through the country’s history, becoming increasingly emotional and amusingly patriotic. By the time she gets to the Japanese annexation, Dan-shim is wrapped up in Korean flags and proclaiming independence out her window.
We then cut to our lost-in-time heroine’s excited cheers for FIFA, rallying her goshiwon housemates by banging on their doors. A somewhat disgruntled Kim Min-seok (Typhoon Family) then steps out of his room in confusion because Dan-shim is babbling about the 2002 semi-finals and not this year’s upcoming games.
Now that Dan-shim has caught up on history, however, there’s a bigger puzzle that she needs to solve. From her past life, the teaser focuses on rain and a mysterious man (perhaps the king?), before our ~evil~ concubine’s untimely death. And here in the 21st century, Dan-shim remarks on the doppelganger resemblance, pointing to either Heo Nam-joon (A Hundred Memories) or his cousin Jang Seung-jo (As You Stood By). But despite the odds, Dan-shim decides to carve her own fate and chooses to stand with leading man Cha Se-gye (Heo Nam-joon).
The fantasy rom-com tale will be unfolding over weekends, premiering this week on the coming May 8. Production for SBS’s My Royal Nemesis has PD Han Tae-sub (Cheer Up, Stove League) directing with scripts by Kang Hyun-joo (Lost in Starlight).
