Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Human, medical, rom-com
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Disney+, Hulu
Reasons to watch: Islands seem to be the current drama trend, and ENA is taking us on an island medical adventure in Doctor on the Edge. Starring Lee Jae-wook and Shin Ye-eun, we have Hong Min-ki, Lee Soo-kyung, and Kim Yoon-woo rounding out the ensemble. (Lee was unable to attend the press conference as he began his military service on May 18.)
Art imitates life here as mandatory military service comes calling for Lee Jae-wook within the drama. As a hotshot plastic surgeon, he has the option of choosing to fulfill his service by working at a hospital rather than being a regular grunt. It’s a no-brainer for Lee, and he sets off for his posting–a remote island hospital that’s infamous for its huge workload and tiny staff. It’s doubly bad for Lee as he has a deep fear of the ocean, soldiers go where they’re told, and he resolves to finish his time quietly without making any friends, or getting into romantic entanglements. (Guess how long that lasts.)
The person who most tests his resolve is Shin Ye-eun, a fellow mainlander. She was once a nurse at a prestigious hospital, but for reasons unknown, quit and relocated to the island hospital. Though she’s sweet and caring, she’s guarding secrets of her own. But despite herself (and Lee’s best efforts to maintain distance), her walls start to come down and our leads find themselves falling in love as they work to save their patients.
Tune in for a healing tale that’s full of romance and comedy, with two outsiders finding a sense of belonging. If you’re a fan of Lee Jae-wook, this is your second-to-last chance to see him till his military discharge in late 2027 (he has one more drama that will be released later this year).
