    Surely Tomorrow: Episodes 9-10

    by Dramaddictally

The penultimate week closes loops on relationship issues and blows open bigger problems inside our heroine’s company and family. With the worst in the past, it looks our leads will be able to band together and fight what’s ahead. Except, this week’s final scene tells us it might not be so simple.

    EPISODES 9-10

We left off in Spain as our duo tried to coax designer Bella Jin to join Jarim (Ji-woo’s company). After a few attempts and some drunken banter, Bella turns down the offer because she loves her current company too much. However, she likes our leads enough to put them in contact with the head designer of her beloved company — who agrees to meet and sign a contract.

This puts things in Ji-woo’s favor at Jarim and Ji-yeon uses it to her advantage to steal some of her husband’s allies. At the moment, Min-woo is still determined to sell Jarim and husband and wife are plucking pawns from the company to cordially fight each other.

Min-woo’s first priority is upping the dosage on Ji-yeon’s drugs, but since she’s now privy to what he’s doing, she’s stopped drinking anything brought to her office by him or her secretary. The problem is that even though she’s stopped ingesting new doses, she still has the effects of what she’s already been poisoned with. Her condition comes in spurts, where sometimes she doesn’t know where she is and believes she’s in another place or time entirely.

On a day when Ji-yeon thinks she’s at school and about to take an exam, Min-woo pushes her into the crowded lobby of the company where everyone can see she’s out of sorts. Luckily, both Ji-woo and Gyung-do are there and they rush to Ji-yeon’s side, trying to limit the damage. But it’s already too late as rumors start to fly that she has dementia.

This incident is how Ji-woo first learns about Ji-yeon’s condition, which Gyung-do fesses up about promptly. From this, Ji-woo has a couple of realizations. One, that she was running off to England to save herself while her sister really needed her help and was alone. And two, that Gyung-do stopped her at the airport because he knew about Ji-yeon’s health and wanted Ji-woo to stay and join the company for her sister’s sake.

Of the two, the second thing is what perturbs Ji-woo the most. It re-sparks her insecurities, even though earlier Gyung-do has said the words, “Don’t leave me now, or I’ll die.” Our heroine has had it rough, feeling unloved and unwanted for being born out of an affair, and it takes a lot to quell her timid heart.

When she and Gyung-do finally talk about what’s bothering her, they’re on the phone while she’s inside her apartment and he’s outside below her balcony. Ji-woo says that she knows she’s being selfish for thinking that Gyung-do stopped her for reasons other than loving her, but that’s the way she feels.

And Gyung-do responds that he used her sister’s disease as an excuse to stop her, since he already wanted to, which is just as selfish. He says he could only think about how she was single again and he wanted to keep her close. “If that’s not love, what is?” he asks.

Ji-woo responds, “Hold me” and Gyung-do runs upstairs to wrap her in a hug. And this appears to be the big conversation they needed to have. If Ji-woo is going to stop running away, she’s got to believe she’s safely loved. Gyung-do is giving her a lot of consistency, and she seems to be believing him this time.

At the same time, now that Min-woo has learned the secret of Ji-woo’s birth, he’s planning to use it against her to generate further bad press for the sisters, since Ji-yeon is already being discredited. But Ji-woo has stepped into her role as director, and knows she has to go to bat for Ji-yeon, so she’s involved in the company game now. To beat Min-woo, she goes public with her birth secret first.

Here, we get a frank conversation between Ji-woo and her mom, where each one explains their side. Mom was lonely and never meant for the affair to happen. But Ji-woo says it’s not the affair that’s the problem, it’s that Mom took her guilt out on Ji-woo by blaming her. Ji-woo cries that she had no idea why her mother didn’t love her, and so she took it out on herself.

Mom agrees that Ji-woo should go public with the info before Min-woo does and I think this is the best these two can do in terms of a resolution between them. There’s no defensiveness or outright blame. And this seems like more of the closure that Ji-woo needed to move on.

When the article about her birth goes live (written by Gyung-do’s boss, who has surely done a turnaround), it’s framed as Ji-woo wanting to focus on the company to repay her father’s love. She always avoided Jarim because she thought she didn’t deserve it, but her father wanted her to work there. So, she’s done feeling ashamed, and will step into her role. And all of this leads to positive press for her honesty.

This foils Min-woo’s plan, so he needs a new angle. What he comes up with is the idea that having affairs must run in the family. That is, now that everyone knows Ji-woo’s mother had an affair, he’s going to make it look like Ji-woo also had an affair (with Gyung-do) to get out of her marriage. This will make the public hate Jarim, the sisters will be kicked out, and he can sell the company.

The final shot shows us a damning scene that’s out of context, where Ji-woo is meeting Gyung-do, but when she approaches, he backs up with a solemn look. We cut to Ji-woo walking away while Gyung-do bows deeply as she does. Are we in for a breakup “for Ji-woo’s sake” next week? I really hope not. After all the progress that Ji-woo has made (I’m pretty sure she even quit drinking), I don’t want to see her newfound trust in Gyung-do go out the window with some shenanigans like that.

But, if that’s what we’re in for, the best I can hope is that it makes Ji-woo even stronger to stand on her own. And then these two delicate creatures will be even stronger together. *fingers crossed*
