A beloved star confessed that after entering university, she was obsessed with her appearance, revealing the issues she faced as a result.
On August 23rd, a video titled “Unreleased Past Photos of Honorary British Citizen Excavated” was posted on the YouTube channel Honorary British Citizen.
In the video, Baek Jin Kyung looked back on her style evolution by revealing past photos one by one, from when she was a 20-year-old college student living in the U.S. and the U.K.
Baek Jin Kyung said, “I lived in Korea, then went to the U.S., returned to Korea, and then went to the U.K.,” adding, “My aesthetic preferences changed as I moved between countries and went through various tastes.”
The first photos were from her freshman year in college. She recalled that she couldn’t afford to go to a salon and bleached her hair at home, sporting orange hair, heavy eyeliner, and circle lenses.
She said she paid a lot of attention to her appearance even when taking photos.
She candidly revealed, “If you look at my old photos, they were always taken from above,” adding that she did a lot of photo retouching to make her chin look slimmer.
Notably, after entering a film department, her perspective on appearance changed significantly.
Baek Jin Kyung recalled, “I studied in Suwon and then went to university, where my friends in the film department were really well-groomed and pretty,” and said she was shocked by the freshman welcome party.
She admitted, “I thought this wasn’t the time for me to be like that, so I became obsessed with my appearance.”
Eventually, Baek Jin Kyung started trying to lose weight. The problem was her method. Instead of exercising or following a balanced diet, she drastically reduced her food intake.
She revealed, “During the summer break of my first year, I simply starved myself. I hardly exercised.”
As a result, her weight dropped rapidly. She surprised many by saying, “I lost weight fast—I lost about 15 to 20 kilograms.”
However, she was clear that her weight loss method was unhealthy. Reflecting on her past, she emphasized, “It wasn’t a healthy way to lose weight.”
Baek Jin Kyung’s aesthetic preferences continued to change afterward. She dramatically cut her long hair, influenced by actress Goo Hye Sun’s short haircut. While living in Los Angeles, she enjoyed tanned skin, heavy smoky makeup, and large hoop earrings.
At the time, she wanted to look like a Korean American, playfully calling herself a “late-stage case of American disease” as she recalled those days humorously.
She experienced various trends, from rock and bohemian styles to stylings reminiscent of Kim Kardashian.
Looking back on her twenties, Baek Jin Kyung said, “My aesthetic changed so much from day to day.”
She encouraged others to have diverse experiences, rather than excessively worrying about appearance and others’ opinions like she did.
Baek Jin Kyung advised, “Don’t be too concerned about others’ eyes. I hope you try what you want to do,” encouraging people to experiment with different styles and makeup.
Baek Jin Kyung is a YouTuber based in the U.K. In 2023, she married British actor Rohan Nedd. She recently announced her pregnancy and is expecting a daughter this December.
