Reasons to watch: Netflix’s latest drama Can This Love Be Translated is about to show viewers that love can find us in the most unexpected places.
Kim Sun-ho and Go Yoon-jung play our protagonists and though they’re from different backgrounds, they’re brought together by language. More specifically, Kim Sun-ho is the man who will be Go Yoon-jung’s voice and ears as she travels the world as part of an international reality show.
The reality show’s concept is all about going to beautiful places around the world and made-for-TV “romance” with a top Japanese actor (played by Fukushi Sota) joining Go as co-host. Since the co-hosts don’t have a common language, and since she’ll need to be able to communicate with locals, the reality show hires multilingual interpreter, Kim Sun-ho. The man has a knack for language–but no talent for getting along with people and his prickly personality puts him at odds with Go Yoon-jung immediately.
But as they traverse the world together and Kim interprets Go’s thoughts into whatever language she needs, he starts to fall for her. However, our polyglot interpreter has never been good at expressing his own feelings and when Fukushi Sota starts to act on his attraction to Go Yoon-jung, Kim is faced with the choice of playing Cyrano or finally confessing.
Watch to enjoy beautiful visuals, and for a romance that is set to be full of longing and meditations on communication. I am a sucker for a Hong Sisters drama; I can almost always count on the writing duo to keep me entertained, so I’m looking forward to how they will spin this story about love and languages.
