ONEWE are getting into the pre-release game with Ferris Wheel (관람차), which is a taste of their upcoming demo album. The word “demo” feels more like branding than reality here, as I’m not sure songs can still be considered demos after they’ve been promoted with music videos and performed on shows. But regardless of vernacular, the song extends the band’s usual sound with the confidence and polish you’d expect.
Ferris Wheel coasts along classic K-pop melodies. It’s as if they reached their fists into a bin of OST hooks and pulled out a bunch to string together. The song has more pep in its step than you might expect and its strings elements make the group sound a bit like K-band peers Lucy. It’s all very tasteful and nice, but the song doesn’t deliver anything we haven’t heard a million times elsewhere. It has a nice wintery sheen to it that should find home on seasonal playlists and its always nice to hear Yonghoon’s vocal doing its thing. Beyond that, I can’t imagine myself going back to this.
