Re-imagining modern day South Korea with the what-if scenario of a constitutional monarchy that descends from Joseon times, MBC presents Perfect Crown with a curtsy and bow from IU (When Life Gives You Tangerines) and Byun Woo-seok (Lovely Runner) in the first script reading stills.
Society has of course changed over the centuries and the rank of royality versus commoner doesn’t hold the same kind of weight in 2026. Still, those divisions are not entirely meaningless and the lack of noble titles is a source of grievance for our chaebol-but-a-commoner heroine Sung Hee-joo (IU). There is, though, the option of marrying above her station and that’s where our hero comes in.
Incidentally, Hee-joo’s proposal also benefits Lee Wan (Byun Woo-seok), a.k.a. Grand Prince Yi-ahn. Because despite having the fancy title and decorum, Wan’s life is strictly dictated by royal family obligations and he’s virtually unable to do anything that he truly wants. And as is the dramaland way, our pair’s contract marriage will tie a knot of ~love~ as well.
In second lead roles, Noh Sang-hyun (Genie Make a Wish) plays Prime Minister Min Jung-woo, who is best friends with Wan and is also on friendly terms with Hee-joo as her sunbae from school. In contrast, Gong Seung-yeon (My Lovely Journey) is posed to be our antagonist as noblewoman Yoon Yi-rang, who grew up under everyone’s expectations as well as her personal dream of one day becoming queen.
Although not featured here, supporting characters include Wan’s personal aide Yoo Soo-bin (Concrete Market); Hee-joo’s secretary Lee Yeon (D.P. 2); and Hee-joo’s older brother Lee Jae-won (The Manipulated). We’ll also be seeing Jo Seung-yeon (Spring Fever), Park Joon-myun (Bon Appetit Your Majesty), and Jo Jae-yoon (Queen Mantis) among other talents.
Production for the romance has PD Park Joon-hwa (Love Your Enemy, Alchemy of Souls) and PD Bae Hee-young (Love Your Enemy, Cinderella at 2AM) co-directing alongside scripts by rookie writer Yoo Ji-won (winner of MBC’s 2022 writing contest). MBC’s upcoming Perfect Crown is slated to premiere in April and will be streaming internationally on Disney+.
