Reasons to watch: A dark thriller awaits us in the new Disney+ drama, Bloody Flower. Adapted from a Korean novel, the series focuses on matters of life and death while posing the question of whether our lead, Ryeoun, is delivering people from harm–or just a plain murderer.
The question isn’t as simple as it seems, even with Ryeoun admitting to the deaths of multiple people to Geum Sae-rok (who plays a prosecutor here). He isn’t your average murder suspect, he’s a genius with a medical background. Thanks to his talent (and a possible God complex), Ryeoun had become obsessed with finding a cure for all ailments thought incurable. He claims to have had a breakthrough–but it involved the death of several people thanks to his “need” for human testing. While the prosecution’s case seems solid, it’s up to defense attorney Sung Dong-il to make sure his new client is acquitted. His motivation is entirely person; he has a terminally ill daughter who Ryeoun has promised to cure–but only if he walks out of court a free man. Deepening the mystery, as the trial progresses, both Sung and Geum start to suspect that their involvement in this case didn’t happen by chance.
A twisted tale that weighs matters of conscience against matters of the heart, there will be plenty of suspense and mystery as the drama builds out the story and how our characters’ lives came to intersect. As a Ryeoun fan, I’m excited to see him take a walk on the dark side and to see what he brings to the character.
