Red Velvet’s Wendy is once again facing intense backlash from international K-Pop fans after appearing in a YouTube Short that many viewers have criticized as racially insensitive.

The controversy stems from a video posted on the Chilsung Label YouTube channel, titled “후드영어 vs 교양영어 비교” (“Hood English vs Polite English Comparison”).

    DinDin | IMDb

The short features Wendy alongside Korean rapper DinDin, with the two demonstrating different ways of speaking English. While Wendy herself does not say the so-called “hood English” phrases, her presence in the video has been enough to spark heated reactions.

Many netizens argue that the video relies on stereotypes tied to Black culture and African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Because Wendy has previously been criticized for racially insensitive impressions earlier in her career, some netizens say her involvement — even as a participant rather than the main speaker — shows extremely poor judgment.

one thing about wendy ugly ass is that she’s gonna be a the scene of anti blackness https://t.co/93nlo0l5si

wendy just never learned her lesson https://t.co/0D8VGHL0eN

How is Wendy still doing this..? https://t.co/kVl7CZHBH1

However, the situation has also divided fans. Many have defended Wendy, pointing out that DinDin was the one delivering the phrases under criticism, while Wendy spoke standard English throughout the video.

you ppl are so weird for posting this out of context lmao it was about HIS experience. wendy was literally speaking general english. you ppl would twist anything to defend your fucka$s faves. my bad for expecting kpop stans to grow a brain overnight.pic.twitter.com/GRixgxbF1t https://t.co/XnVwLit2GR

It was him and his insistence. Then writers probably thought it was a good idea to do that bit for yt shorts and are the ones behind the captions. So why are ppl acting like that’s her idea? He’s not even getting half the hate and ppl just singling her out 🥴 https://t.co/p5dliyMcrG pic.twitter.com/Z4iz7ibYkI

the guy speaking aave but people are calling wendy racist…the tweet coming from a nct fan too 😂 https://t.co/5CYBq8TlGg

Despite the debate, the backlash points to how Wendy’s past continues to shape public perception. Even years later, her involvement in sensitive content quickly reignites debate.
