2016 was the year of me seriously coming back to kdrama, started posting officially in Dramabeans (before that I was just a silent lurker) dan also the year I think South Korean productions had produced quite a number of amazing and notable dramas (also the first year we were introduced to Dr. Romantic).
My 2016’s best kdramas:
1. Guardian: The Lonely and Great God a.k.a Goblin
~A personal favourite. The storytelling, the breathtaking cinematography and the unforgettable soundtrack (Stay With Me by Chanyeol and Punch), Goblin is one of the most timeless K-dramas ever. The bromance between Goblin and Grim Reaper, along with the heart-wrenching love stories (Goblin-Eun-tak and Grimm Resper-Sunny), is something no other series has been able to match. Even after all of these years, Goblin still feels magical. I also remember making new friends with people who enjoyed this drama too.
2. Descendants of the Sun
~such a memorable romantic drama, especially its soundtrack, Always by Yoon-mirae! This drama became a cultural phenomenon -Hallyu Wave- and a massive hit because of the Song Song Couple. I thought they were looking so good together; but after their divorce, I realise they are just two really good looking and popular/power stars. Looking back, more fans were actually stan the second couple (who got a better storyline and good chemistry). My honest confession: I havent watch any drama by Song Joong-ki after this. But still, it was a good drama and i would recommend it to any kdrama beginner.
3. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
~another personal favourite due to its powerful story, emotional performances and high production values. Despite of its tragic ending, I still love it for its intense historical fantasy, complex characters and memorable cast, like Lee Joon-gi, IU, Kang Ha-neul, Jong-hyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, Baekhyun, and Seohyun. I know, some fans are still waiting for the promised sequel which is unlikely to happen, right?
4. The K2
~love it for top-tier action-thriller, as well as its intense fight choreography, political intrigue and standout performances particularly JiChang as an elite bodyguard and Song Yoon-ah as a powerful, complex, and emotionally driven villain. Also noted its lush cinematography, particularly its opening scenes set in Spain.
Honourable Mention:
1. Signal
2. Dr. Romantic
3. Love in the Moonlight
4. Hwarang
5. Bring It On, Ghost
6. The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop
