Joo Ji-hoon and Ha Ji-won strive for a politically-charged Climax

    by solstices

Building up to its eventual Climax, ENA’s upcoming political mystery is brewing a swirling storm of lofty ambitions and selfish motivations. Clocking in at just 10 episodes, this melo-noir will illuminate the survival schemes of those navigating the power cartel that sits at society’s summit.

Joo Ji-hoon (The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call) stars as Bang Tae-seob, a humble dirt spoon born with barely anything to his name. From studying and sweating in a cramped goshiwon room, to schmoozing with and getting slapped by his superiors, Tae-seob has painstakingly worked his way up the corporate ladder. But in the cutthroat sphere of Korea’s top prosecutors, Tae-seob needs a key to unlock the true upper echelons.

Said key turns out to be Ha Ji-won (Curtain Call) as the top star actress Chu Sang-ah. They marry, perhaps fuelled more by ambition than love, and rise even higher together. But Tae-seob soon begins to notice that something’s amiss. “My wife is hiding something from me,” he tells Nana (My Man is Cupid), who plays his informant Hwang Jung-won. Under Tae-seob’s instructions, Jung-won infiltrates Sang-ah’s circle in hopes of uncovering her Pandora’s box.

The hunt leads Tae-seob to the WR Group conglomerate, who may as well have Korea in the palms of their hands. “Rather than withering away, it’s better to be shattered at once,” remarks Cha Joo-young (The Queen Who Crowns) as the ruthlessly calculative Lee Yang-mi, the second wife of WR Group’s aging chairman. “You simply don’t know Chu Sang-ah’s true face,” Yang-mi sneers at Tae-seob.

To add to the complicated power struggle, there’s also internal strife within the WR Group. Oh Jung-se (Tempest) steps into the shoes of Kwon Jong-wook, the chairman’s eldest son. Determined to drag his step-mother down and rise to his rightful position, Jong-wook ultimately joins hands with Tae-seob. After all, the enemy of one’s enemy is an ally, aren’t they?

To rise or to fall — who will end up on which side of this vicious battle? At the end of the day, Tae-seob has his sights fixated on a single, unchanging goal. He will stand atop the apex of Korea, no matter what it takes.

Directed by filmmaker Lee Ji-won (Miss Baek), who penned the scripts alongside Shin Ye-seul, Climax is slated for a March 16 premiere.
