HYBE’s reported comments aren’t sitting well with everyone.

BTS is reportedly moving away from using the group’s well-known signature color, triggering intense “anti-feminism” scrutiny from fans.

Toronto, Canada, is ringing in BTS’s upcoming WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ concerts at Rogers Stadium this weekend with 20 temporary “BTS Boulevard” signs installed in the city’s Koreatown North. The signs, which will stay up for over a month, feature ARIRANG‘s striking red-and-black palette.

Speaking about the design to Now Toronto, Cheng revealed that the signs’ color scheme came directly from BTS’s management, and her comments have raised eyebrows among fans.

Some people might wonder why [the sign] not purple because apparently everyone associates BTS with purple. Las Vegas, I think, lit the whole main strip purple to welcome BTS.

    — Lily Cheng, Toronto City Councillor

According to Councillor Cheng, the idea of a purple sign design was raised with HYBE officials but was quickly shot down, with the group’s management stating, “we’re evolving the brand.”

When we asked BTS management, they actually said, ‘No, no, no, we don’t want purple because we’re evolving the brand and the current concert, ARIRANG, the branding is black and red.’

    — Lily Cheng, Toronto City Councillor

The comments have set off a wave of criticism, with many fans lamenting the “end of borahae” and others slamming HYBE for referring to BTS as a “brand” rather than artists.

    End of Borahae💜

BTS is “evolving the brand” and not longer wants to use purple as brand. For the ARIRANG era is officially Red and Black 🔴 pic.twitter.com/gpA3kysDrU

That is so fucking weird. If they would have just said “we want red/black to align with Arirang concept”, sure, fine. But the “we don’t want purple because we’re evolving the brand”. Wtf? Calling BTS “a brand” is also quite something. https://t.co/TtUX5vLZ2A pic.twitter.com/IPGUAyNozJ

Many more, however, are more concerned with the possible gender-related implications of a move away from purple. Fans are pointing out that the color purple carries strong ties to feminism as one of the official colors of International Women’s Day, as well as a major association with BTS’s current female-heavy fanbase. As such, several are questioning whether “evolving” away from the color signals a push toward a more mainstream, male-skewing audience.

was the purple too feminist https://t.co/JYSwGKZK5F

so we were right. they do want a new male audience. the tiktok on the boat, that article revealing they’re rebranding from the signature color purple to red and black. good luck with your non loyal, NON PROFITABLE, homophobic male fanbase bts

seems like they want a more mainstream audience and purple might be too feminine for that 😐 https://t.co/MQKjXJaTVS

The backlash comes amid fierce negative reactions to members RM and J-Hope attending controversial artist Chris Brown’s concert earlier this month. The pair also posed backstage with Brown, whose history includes a 2009 legal case for felony assault against his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Since the controversy erupted, many fans have labelled the members’ actions tone-deaf toward BTS’s majority-female audience.
