IU and Byun Woo-seok burden the weight of the Perfect Crown

MBC’s fantasy romance Perfect Crown imagines an alternate reality where a monarchy still exists in Korea, and Byun Woo-seok (Lovely Runner) is their handsome prince. As if that wasn’t fantastical enough, IU (When Life Gives You Tangerines) shows up as his bride-to-be and proposes a contract marriage that will inevitably end in real feelings and love.
The latest teaser begins with Sung Hee-joo (IU) asking Grand Prince Yi-ahn (Byun Woo-seok) to marry her. She lists all her good qualities from her education to her skills, and we see a glimpse of the world Hee-joo inhabits. Despite her commoner background, her family runs a conglomerate, and Hee-joo flaunts her wealth with ease and a charming smile.
A marriage of convenience, though, should benefit both parties, and in Yi-ahn’s case, this means getting his in-laws to stop meddling. It’s a tempting offer that the grand prince cannot refuse, which puts him in direct conflict with his sister-in-law Queen Dowager Yoon Yi-rang, played by Gong Seung-yeon (My Lovely Journey).
The queen dowager implores Prime Minister Min Jung-woo, played by Noh Sang-hyun (Genie, Make A Wish), to intervene, and as Hee-joo’s close sunbae, he has multiple reasons to oppose the upcoming nuptials. He believes the best way to protect Hee-joo is to keep her away from the crown, but his request to the prince may have come a step too late.
What might have started as a ruse turns into something else as Hee-joo and Yi-ahn grow closer together. Attending baseball games, waltzing in front of crowds, and holding hands down palace halls, the smiles on both their faces hint at affection, and a couple of naysayers may not be enough to change their hearts.
Directed by PD Park Joon-hwa (Love Your Enemy, Alchemy of Souls) and PD Bae Hee-young (Love Your Enemy, Cinderella at 2AM) with scripts penned by Yoo Ji-won, Perfect Crown is slated for twelve episodes and rings its wedding bells on April 10 in the Friday-Saturday slot.
