But it has not been well received.

IU has appeared to break her silence amid the backlash surrounding her latest K-Drama, Perfect Crown.

“Perfect Crown” Commits Historical Blunder In Recent Episode, Public Outraged

On May 16, 2026 (KST) the idol actress held a special group-viewing event for the finale of MBC’s Perfect Crown, renting out a movie theater to watch the last episode with members of her fan club, UAENA. The event, held around her birthday, became especially meaningful as IU personally apologized and reflected on the criticism she has received.

During the event, IU opened up about the thoughts she had been carrying recently, especially as both her series and album preparations overlapped. She then appeared to directly acknowledge the criticism and disappointment some viewers had expressed regarding Perfect Crown.

These days, I’ve been thinking a lot that I need to do better and carry more responsibility. I should be doing even better for all of you, but if I disappointed you in any way or showed any shortcomings, that is truly all my fault. I’ll continue forward with more responsibility and do better.

    — IU

IU continued to apologize, saying that as someone who receives so much love from fans, she wants to become a person they can be proud of. She also said she would not dismiss criticism, explaining that she believes there is a reason behind what people say.

I have to become someone UAENAs can be proud of. I’ve had a lot on my mind recently. This is something that would have been resolved if I had simply done better, so as someone who receives your love, I will do better.

I think everything people say has a reason, and I believe it is something I need to accept. If there are parts where I’m lacking, please keep telling me, scolding me, and teaching me. I’ll listen and work to become a better person.

    — IU

Her remarks drew attention because they marked one of the first times IU appeared to address the backlash surrounding Perfect Crown directly.

The Disney+ series, starring IU and Byeon Woo Seok, was one of the most talked-about releases of the year, but reactions were sharply divided. While the cast’s star power generated major buzz, viewers also criticized parts of the drama’s acting, storytelling, and overall execution.

IU in particular received mixed responses for her performance. Many compared it to her acclaimed work in When Life Gives You Tangerines, with some viewers feeling that her acting in Perfect Crown came across as more awkward and less natural. The series itself was also criticized by some for having a forced and uneven plot.

Although IU did not mention the controversy by name, her repeated apologies and emphasis on personal responsibility led many to believe she was aware of the public reaction.

    • She’s just running her mouth though. LOLLLLLL.
    • If she doesn’t write an apology and only says it to fans, is she hoping to get comforted by them and call it a day?
    • She should take responsibility. I don’t know about anything else, but I think the responsibility of the two lead actors is really huge.
    • Instead of just saying things, she should show it through actions. Does apologizing only to fans really count?
    • She seems very cunning.
    • She’s seriously good at playing both sides. With that eloquent way of speaking, she knows how to feed both sides well and how to hit the fans’ soft spot LOL.
    • If she really wanted to lie low and take responsibility, she would have apologized and actually done press interviews. She’s basically asking her fans to defend her. Why would she say nice-sounding words only in front of fans, as if her fans are the only ones who were wronged by this work? Does she think we’re idiots?
    • If she knows it’s her own responsibility, couldn’t she just do a press interview and address things publicly? Choosing silence on official channels and only saying things like that while surrounded by her own fans—doesn’t that just make it look like she’s running her mouth?
    • Where’s the actual taking action for her responsibility though?
    • IU is at least conscientious, but her fans aren’t.
    • She’s guilt tripping her fans.
